Weekly Lesson 45

I AM ON THE TEAM, WHY GO TO CHURCH?

The main reason we go to church is to learn and know more about God. There are so many details in the life of the church, but they exist for one reason, to help you experience (to know and feel) God. The single goal of every church is not to just survive, it is to get you to know God. For once you know God, everything in your life will change.

That is why it is Satan’s goal for you to never know God. He doesn’t want you to change; he likes you just the way you are.
Another reason we go to church is to hear the truth. In church we learn the truth about God. If you do not go to church, then you will learn about God from other untrustworthy sources. We go to church to learn about God and his plan of salvation for the world. How much do you know about God? How many of your personal actions are built on something you found outside of the church? The more we go to church those actions will become Christ like actions. We hear the truth and we begin to obey it and live our lives differently.

Another reason people go to church is to discover the purpose of life itself. We discover why we were created and what Gods’ purpose for our life is. The church reminds us that the key to a happy life is serving others. Researchers tell us people who serve others live longer, happier lives. Wouldn’t you like to live a longer, happier life? Our world is filled with problems. God expects you to make a positive difference. That is why the Bible says,

“and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together (going to church), as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near”. Hebrews 10:24-25.

The whole family can best be trained in Godliness through local churches. Without a regular involvement with the body of Christ something will be missing in the training of all family members which will lead to some unkind behavior.

“Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness as godliness is profitable for all things”. (I Timothy 4:7).

Another reason we go to church is to worship God. Worship is when we have a chance to be in God’s presence. It is during worship that we spend time with God, to talk to Him, to listen to Him. Worship is more than just singing praise songs to God. The entire service on Sunday morning is a time of worship. We sing songs to prepare our minds for our time together with God. During our time of singing we can put aside our worries and problems of everyday life and get ready to meet God and let Him work in our lives.

Our worship continues as we pray for each other and take communion together. We spend time listening to God’s Word as we try to hear what He has to say to each of us for living our lives in a way that is pleasing to God, helpful to others and that helps us grow as people and as Christians.

When was the last time you invited someone to go to church with you? Our city is filled with non-worshippers. You must know someone. Inviting someone to church may be the kindest thing you ever do. Because, when you invite someone to church you are giving them the opportunity to experience God. When you invite someone to church you are giving them the opportunity to hear the truth. When you invite someone to church you are giving them an opportunity for a longer, happier life.

Do you attend church regularly? Do you invite others?
