Weekly Lesson 22

TEAMWORK WITH UNITY

God places an extremely high value on teamwork and unity. We see that there is complete unity within God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. All are equal, and all are one. We call this the Trinity or Godhead. It is a beautiful and powerful thing when we come together in unity with a goal or to be on a team.

John 17:11, I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.

We need to become a person that cares for others. We must believe that God loves everyone, and He also wants us to love them. Our growth as Christians depends on it. We are commanded to love others; we are commanded to show our love to everyone consistently.

Mark 12:29-31, Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; 30 and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

We will never have unity with others or be a good team member if we cannot grab hold of and put into practice these two great commandments. When we don’t live in unity, it is anything but good and pleasant. Disunity in a church makes God’s enemies smile because, in time, the lack of unity will destroy God’s work and the lives of others. No one expects unbelievers or even God’s enemies to live in unity, but Christian brothers and sisters, bonded together by the blood of Jesus, are expected to. When we don’t, the convicting power of God in the world becomes weakened.

So, how then are you going to live and serve God in your church? The choice is yours. If you decide to come together in unity, there is no limit to what can be accomplished. We know this, it will be good and pleasant at least for all who are around you:

Psalm 133:1, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.

We should all seek unity. Let us ask God to send it among us and be a part of everything we try to do. We need to covenant together to lay down our lives for each other and to seek the good of others first. Let us bring an end to the power of evil to weaken and destroy our testimony and the effects on others. Let us come together in unity and watch the Spirit of God dwell within our team.

Here are some practical things we can do for others to bring about and keep unity.

Encourage Them: Christ wants no murmuring, no grumbling, disturbance, or weakening of the unity within the church. The Spirit of Christ is to take the disturbed or upset person and be just like Jesus. We must learn to console, comfort, encourage, exhort, and strengthen each other.

Love Them: there is the image of love. The love of Christ stirs a person to keep unity with other believers. The word “love” is agapÄ“ love; the love that is selfless and prefers others.

Fellowship with Them: if someone is to believe we love them, we must “hang out” or have time together.

Have Compassion: If we allowed His compassion to flow through us, we would begin to see our team and church really become alive and grow?

Treat them the way you would want to be treated. Remember, it’s not about you. It is about getting along with others, even when you may disagree with them. Do you want unity and teamwork, or do you want to have your way?
