Weekly Lesson 3

ITā€™S NOT ABOUT ME

When a person becomes prideful, they have ultimately shifted confidence to self in the place of confidence in God. While there is a positive sense of being proud in achieving that which is good and wholesome, most of the references to pride in the Scripture are negative.

ā€œHaughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, are sin.ā€Ā Ā Proverbs 21:4.
ā€œIt is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek oneā€™s own glory.ā€Ā Proverbs 25:27.
ā€œIn the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him, all his thoughts are, ā€˜There is no God.ā€™Ā Psalms 10:4.

Godā€™s Attitude toward the Proud

Since many thoughts of the proud are wrapped up in self-promotion (look what I can do) and self-sufficiency (I donā€™t need any help), with little or no regard towards God, it is not surprising to the find Godā€™s attitude toward the proud is not encouraging.

ā€œPride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.ā€Ā Proverbs 8:13.
ā€œEveryone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the LORD; be assured, he will not go unpunished.ā€Ā Proverbs 16:5
.

We must try hard to guard against pride in our lives as believers. Christians are not free from the sin of pride, and we can be tricked into it by success, even success that comes from serving the LORD. King Uzziah was a young king who started by following the LORD, yet when he was strong and successful, he succumbed to pride, and the LORD struck him with leprosy.
The remedy for all is in the blood of Jesus; however, Scripture does point to a path that will provide temporary deliverance from the sin of pride. Our remedy for pride is humility.

Remember, the TEAM is more important than any one person. By preferring others, we will fight the pride that reveals itself in our minds. Use the concordance in your Bible and look up the word humble. Read those scriptures and try to put them into practice.

Has your pride hurt your relationship with Jesus or someone else? Are you ready to restore that relationship?
