Weekly Lesson 10

MAKING GOOD DECISIONS

LUKE 6:12-13
12 It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles,

What about big decisions? What about everyday choices? At some point in your life, everyone has some big decisions to make; you might be in the middle of a big decision. And you are wondering, “How should I handle this? What’s the right answer? Where do I turn for help?”

We can take our example from Jesus. Even though He was Lord, He believed it was necessary to spend time with His Father in heaven before He made His decisions or took action on healings, miracles, and even going to the cross.

In the Scripture above, Jesus faced a decision that would shape the rest of history. Have you ever been faced with such a decision – probably not? Jesus was choosing twelve men who would be trained to carry on his ministry when He died. But what if he made the wrong decision? If Jesus selected the wrong men, everything He had worked for while here on earth might just fizzle. This was a big decision Jesus had to make and to make it worse; He was under a lot of pressure in other areas of his life. His enemies were breathing down his neck and plotting against Him. They were so mad at Him in verse before these two verses it says that they “began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.” And don’t be fooled, they weren’t planning a surprise party – they wanted to get rid of this troublemaker.

Do you ever feel the weight of decisions on you? Feel that the whole world – or maybe your entire future rests on this one decision?  I think that Jesus felt that pressure. So what did He do? We read in verse 12 that,

“Jesus went out into the hills to pray and spent the night praying to God.”

How often do you pray about the decisions you have to make in your life?

Don’t think that God will give a clear answer to you for every decision you need to make. He will not necessarily write in the clouds – wear a blue shirt today. But do know that God will provide us with the resources to make those decisions in a godly and wise manner. What resources do you ask?

The Bible (His Word)
People (Friends, Family, Preachers, Church people, Teachers, etc…)
Circumstances (Things that happen or don’t happen. Conditions, Events, Situations)

As you pray and read the Bible, God will give you a very important thing to help you make decisions – WISDOM.

James 1:5 – If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Proverbs 2:6 – If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

Do you want to make good decisions? – seek wisdom. Where? – from God. Go to God in prayer and ask for wisdom. He won’t necessarily tell you which choice to make, but He’ll give you all the wisdom you need to make the best choice.
Do you take your decisions to God in prayer? You can only do that if you know His Son, Jesus.

Here’s the most important decision you can ever make – Do you know Jesus? Is He Lord of your Life?
