Weekly Lesson 30

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

A famous saying in the world of sports training its, “No pain, No gain.” What this is trying to bring to our mind is that there is no reward without the effort. The same is true when serving Jesus and studying His Word.

2 Timothy 2:15, Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

The command above says, “Be diligent,” other Bible translations say, “Study,” both mean to put effort into knowing and reading God’s Word.

Many of you in school are capable of higher grades than the ones you get. The most significant barrier for most of us is not how smart we are, but how committed we are to learning. Sometimes school is boring, and some subjects will not be what we like. While we can’t help whether we are not interested in a particular subject, we can do the right thing and study hard to make good grades in that class. There are many changes you can make in your attitude toward school and your Bible study. Developing good study habits will make us more successful at both. Here we will focus on your Bible study.

Do not be afraid to ask God questions.

Asking questions is a simple and effective way of making sure you understand what you are reading. Take this one seriously, and you cannot help but learn a few things that otherwise would have passed by you. No matter how hard you think it may be, asking questions will increase your level of interest. Why? Because to ask a serious question, you have to be wanting to understand what you are reading; make it your goal to ask at least one well thought out question about something you are reading. It will allow you to use your Bible concordance and look up more scripture to bring a better understanding. Without even trying, you’ll find you remember and understand more of the Bible.

Do not be afraid to ask people questions.

One of the reasons we do not ask questions is that we fear looking stupid in front of someone. Often the one we ask the question of has asked the same question or had to get help understanding Bible verses. Your parents, Pastors, Godly friends, and teachers have, at one time, or another had to ask many questions in their journey to gain an understanding of God’s Word. They will be happy to help you, and many times will feel honored that you came to them. Remember, God does not expect us always to know the meaning of what we have just read in His Word. However, He does expect us to keep searching and try to find a better understanding. So, do not be afraid to ask others questions. You may even gain a more in-depth relationship with the one you ask.

Write out your question and answers you get.

Always take notes while reading the Bible and make it a habit of writing down all the questions you may have. Ask others the questions you have and then write down the correct answers you are given and make a notation on who answered (a friend’s name or your Pastor, for example). Put the asked and responded to questions so you will be able to read and remember them later. Maybe include the date so that you will know when they happened. You will soon be able to see how you have been growing in your understanding of God’s Word. Begin to make a list of the people you can trust to help you with your Bible study. Use them as an important part of your journey of being a “diligent” studier of God’s Word.

Read your notes each night before you go to bed.

Try to read your daily notes each night in bed before you go to sleep. Treat them like a storybook you are in to and make it a habit to read your notes at the end of each day. It is a proven fact that when you are exposed to events and information in the last hour before going, sleep will stay embedded in your memory. Think about it; you can almost always answer the question, “what did you do before you went to sleep last night?” with little or no effort while other daily details are not as easy to remember. Making God’s Word the last thing you put in your mind every night will be something you can do for the rest of your life. So, DO THE HOMEWORK.

Do you make reading the Bible a daily routine?
